The Hand & Spear was built in 1830 by Lord King, Baron of Ockham. He called it the “Hand and Spear” from his family crest which shows a hand grasping a spear! Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson stayed here, at the Hand & Spear hotel, while correcting proofs of his classic 19th-century novel, Treasure Island & the famous “Bentley Boys” dinned here after racing at Brooklands motor course from 1919-1931.
